It’s no secret that overcrowded shelters often face the difficult decision to euthanize animals whose profiles may not align with quick adoptions. Typically, people seek out puppies and animals in perfect health, overlooking those in greater need, such as those who have suffered terrible abuse and abandonment. It’s not the first time we’ve seen animals with faces of terror over their fate.
And this time, Kala, a mixed-breed hound, and Keira, a boxer mix, touched our hearts deeply with a heart-wrenching image.
They were on the euthanasia list, the shelter staff always does everything possible to prevent that from happening, so they took a photo at a moment when they were truly scared and shared it on social media in an attempt to find a home for them.
Kala hugged Keira as if comforting her, while Keira’s gaze showed a lot of fear.
A coordinator from the Etowah Valley Animal Shelter shared the photo, which quickly gained widespread reach.
Angels Among Us Pet Rescue also wanted to help and shared the photo with a text that seemed to come from Kala, saying that “this would be their last day and that the shelter staff could do nothing more for them, that in a few hours they would be separated from their friend, and that she would cry a lot in sadness”.
The collaboration of different organizations had results; quickly, everyone was talking about them.
Everyone was calling for immediate help of any kind, from donations for their care to prayers for the dogs to find a good and loving home. Two hours later, something wonderful happened: a woman named Cris Folchitto offered a temporary home.
That morning, everyone thought they were going to die, and in just two hours, they were able to save them from their cruel fate.
Then they continued the campaign to find a permanent home, which also didn’t take them much time.
Two friends living together in Atlanta saw the story through a renowned magazine, decided to contact the foundation, and finalize the adoption. Wendy and Pam are the names of these wonderful women who not only gave them a home but will keep them together for the rest of their lives.
