Every mother always wants the best for their children, and when something bad happens to them, it is a hard blow to their heart. However, being a mom is being a warrior, and in the face of adversity, they always motivate themselves to move forward for their children.
An example of this is Abigail Wardle, the mother of Oliver, an 11-month-old boy who has lost all of his limbs.
Abigail from Cleethorpes, England, took her son to the doctor for the first time in March because she noticed that the little one was a little unwell. The specialist only recommended some changes in the diet, a lot of liquids, and acetaminophen because he did not find anything wrong.
Back at home, Abigail felt that her son was getting worse to the point of feeling him “lifeless” and decided to take him to the hospital emergency room. There, the nurses immediately became concerned about Oliver’s appearance, but they still didn’t know what was wrong with him.
“When I moved him, it was like his bones hurt,” the mother recalled.
Abigail had no idea what was happening to her son, and the situation seemed as surprising to her as it was to the doctors.
She could hear a doctor calling another hospital on the phone, asking how to treat Oliver. His hands and feet had started turning purple, and “I just remember thinking he was cold and telling them to put some socks on him,” Mrs. Wardle commented.
The specialists used medication to induce a coma and keep the child alive. Later, they discovered that Oliver had an undiagnosed throat infection that had become septic.
Although the little one had not shown signs of infection, his body was having an extreme response to the infectious organisms. His condition was considered a potentially deadly medical emergency.
“Sepsis occurs when an infection (in the skin, lungs, urinary tract, or elsewhere) triggers a chain reaction throughout the body. Without timely treatment, sepsis can quickly lead to tissue damage, organ failure, and death,” according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
The sepsis that Oliver suffered was really severe and led to the amputation of all four of his limbs. In a Facebook post, the devastated mother recounted how his left leg was amputated almost before her eyes, after it detached when a nurse and she were trying to change his diaper.
The dramatic procedure was necessary to save the little one’s life, and after this, Oliver managed to recover and return home in July.
Most importantly, Oliver remains that smiling baby as always, although it breaks my heart. I simply can’t believe he’s still smiling after what happened, what a tough man I have. My son is a great inspiration,” said Abigail.
If it hadn’t been for her decision to take him to the doctor, the story could have been fatal. Oliver’s mother had no idea that the child was sick as he did not show any signs other than being visibly unwell.
