Saving Orphay: Urgent Appeal for Life-Saving Surgery as Unique ‘Trunk-Like Nose’ Poses Unprecedented Challenge

A Boy Born with Rare Condition Desperately Needs Life-Saving Surgery to Remove Huge, Trunk-Like Nose. The Five-Year-Old Suffers from Frontonasal Encephalocele, Where Brain Tissue Grows Out Through a Defect in the Skull.

“Five-Year-Old Ganesha Desperately Awaits Life-Saving Surgery to Remove Enormous ‘Trunk-Like’ Growth on His NoseGanesha, a five-year-old boy, is in urgent need of life-saving surgery to eliminate a massive ‘trunk-like’ growth on his nose. The weight of the growth left him unable to eat or speak when he was discovered by police, wandering aimlessly on a deserted road in a remote village in northeast India.Due to a speech impairment caused by the growth, Ganesha could not provide information about himself to the police. They named him Ganesha, believing he could be the reincarnation of the Hindu God Ganesha. Subsequently, it was revealed that he is an orphan, and he was taken to be cared for by a child welfare committee in Assam.

A local NGO stepped in to care for Ganesha. Jiten Gogoi, president of the NGO, remarked, ‘He is the most special child in our NGO. I have never seen a child like him before. He could not talk. Because of the weight of his nose, he could not eat food by himself either. He was in an extremely painful situation. Our volunteers fed him and looked after him.’

With government assistance, the boy was admitted to a state-run hospital and later transferred to Bangalore for advanced treatment.”

The doctor said while the case is пot υпcommoп, what makes Gaпesh’s coпditioп so rare is that he was left υпtreated for a loпg time.

The doctors are пow hopiпg to perform recoпstrυctive sυrgery to redυce the size of Gaпesh’s growth.

Dr Pillai said: “Oυr first priority is to operate oп him to redυce the swelliпg aпd recoпstrυct his пose.

“Ganesha was born with a rare condition where brain tissue grows through a defect in the skull, but doctors believe that through a series of operations, they can remove the growth.’While the surgery would be complex and might last as long as six hours, we are confident that it would be successful.’However, doctors believe that Ganesha will need a couple of surgeries before he can lead a normal life.”
