Selena Gomez Will Return for a Wizards of Waverly Place Sequel

We’re only three weeks into the new year, and Selena Gomez has already had a 2024 to remember. The star had a Marilyn Monroe moment at the Golden Globes; her whispered (and intensely lip-read) conversation with Taylor Swift went viral; she brought her new boyfriend Benny Blanco to the Emmys; and it was announced that she’d be playing Linda Ronstadt in a new big-screen biopic. And the good news continues: on January 18, Deadline reported that the former Disney Channel actor would be returning to her roots by reprising the part of Alex Russo in a Wizards of Waverly Place sequel for the network.

In addition to guest-starring in the forthcoming pilot for the reboot, the multihyphenate is set to executive produce too, alongside her former onscreen sibling, David Henrie, who will be returning to the role of Justin Russo as a series regular. Per the log line, the revival—penned by Jed Elinoff and Scott Thomas, and directed by Andy Fickman—will pick up “after a mysterious incident at WizTech, where an adult Justin Russo has left his wizard powers behind, opting for a normal, human life with his wife and two sons. But, he gets a surprise when a powerful young wizard in need of training shows up at his door… and Justin must embrace his past to ensure the future of the Wizard World.”

That young novice (and the show’s lead), Billie, will be played by Janice LeAnn Brown, while Alkaio Thiele has been cast as Roman Russo, Justin’s eldest son, and Mimi Gianopulos as Justin’s wife, Giada. And though Gomez’s part is reportedly small, we can’t wait to see where Alex has ended up all these years later. Bring on the quippy one-liners.
