As a little girl, her musical theater aspirations were dashed when a talent agent signed one of her brothers instead of her. She revealed to Candis magazine that her deep voice prevented her from being chosen and forced her to pursue acting.

However, when she began auditioning for roles in commercials, her singing voice again did not help her case. Casting directors were not impressed with her hoarse voice. The Black Widow actress recalls losing count of casting directors asking her if she had a sore throat. Johansson shared with Candis magazine 

“When I was younger, I trained as a singer because I really wanted to do musical theater, but my voice was too deep so I couldn’t get cast! So I turned to acting instead. I went in for the audition, I was a cute little blonde, then I opened my mouth and said [in a low voice], ‘Buy this product, it’s amazing!’ That was quite a disadvantage at the time. I lost count of the number of times I heard the casting director ask me if I had a sore throat.”
