In a guest appearance on ‘The Goop Podcast,’ Scarlett Johansson reveals she won’t return to Marvel for the ‘Black Widow’ role.

During ‘The Goop Podcast,’ when asked about her future plans with superhero roles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Scarlett Johansson stated that she won’t be returning to Marvel for the ‘Black Widow’ role. ‘I’ve completed it. My chapter is done. I’ve done all the things I needed to do, including coming back and playing my character over and over again. It’s been over a decade; it’s truly been a unique experience,’ the actress shared.

Scarlett Johansson’s unequivocal statement about not returning to Marvel for the ‘Black Widow’ role has left many of her fans quite surprised. For many, the association between Scarlett Johansson and ‘Black Widow’ is inseparable when thinking about the actress and Marvel superhero films.

‘Black Widow’ stands as one of Scarlett Johansson’s iconic roles, representing a significant part of her filmography. She made her debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in the blockbuster ‘Iron Man 2’ in 2010 and continued to be a stalwart presence in the franchise through nine films.

Following Black Widow’s sacrifice in ‘Avengers: Endgame’ (2019), Marvel and Disney collaborated to create a standalone film for the character two years later. However, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the film’s release plans were postponed. When Disney eventually released ‘Black Widow,’ it premiered both in theaters and on the streaming platform simultaneously, leading to lower box office revenue and impacting the actress’s earnings.

Later, in July 2021, Scarlett Johansson sued Disney, asserting that her contract with Marvel and Disney ensured the exclusive theatrical release of ‘Black Widow’ and that a significant portion of her salary was contingent on the film’s success at the box office. However, she later withdrew the lawsuit after resolving the dispute with the studio.
